The Pioneer CDJ 2000 nexus 2 is the current top of the range and it is a big improvement on the older models. Most club DJs use the Rekordbox link function to play tracks from a single SD card or USB storage device, but it also plays CDs.

The CDJ 2000 nexus is the industry standard and it is what most DJs will expect to find in the booth. It has Rekordbox link for SD and USB media and many Traktor & Serato users need this model for compatibility reasons when using HID mode.

The CDJ 2000 is the CDJ that made USB DJing the norm, and it introduced the vital link function that allows DJs to share one USB stick or SD card between decks. It retains the classic features for CD & MP3 playback from the CDJ1000mk3.

Rane MP2015

The Rane MP 2015 is one of the most important mixers of the last 10yrs, bringing a rotary analog feel to digital mixing, with an old school isolator, HPF/LPF filters, and built in high end soundcard for Serato or Traktor. Many regard the US made version to be the best sounding of the popular club mixers.

The Allen & Heath Xone 92 is still the mixer of choice for most underground DJs and it is the benchmark for club sound. The awesome VCA filters can be used on any channel and the effects routing (for outboard processors) is second to none. Each channel has a 4 band EQ.

The DJM900 nexus 2 is a big improvement in sound quality over the older Pioneer mixers and it’s the current top of the range. It retains the familiar DJM900nxs layout, but adds dual USB soundcard for Serato DJ Pro / Traktor, as well as some big improvements to the effects section.

The ever popular DJM900 is a huge improvement over the DJM800 in terms of in built effects, sound quality, faders, and build quality. It also has a Traktor Scratch / Serato DJ Pro (club kit) sound card built in so laptop DJs only need a USB cable. It also has many MIDI mappable controls.

The DJM800 is very easy to use, thanks to a simple layout and idiot proof effects. It has a basic LPF/HPF filter or crush effect on each of the 4 channels, and 13 beat linked effects in total but the most popular ones are probably filter, echo, delay, flanger, reverb & roll.

Pioneer XDJ1000

The XDJ 1000 does not have CD/SD compatibility, and many of the features from the pro models have been moved to the touch screen (rather than having heavy duty buttons). It retains USB link function and the user experience is similar to a CDJ2000 as it has all of the main controls and displays, as well as HID mode for DVS systems like Serato. Recommended mixer is DJM600.

The XDJRX2 is a stripped down version of a club set up, retaining Rekordbox USB link and some key features. The small jogwheels don’t feel the same as a CDJ2000, but it has loops, hot cues etc. The basic 2 channel mixer section still has the 4 most popular Pioneer effects – filter, echo, delay & reverb and the mk2 version adds a colour touchscreen with QWERTY search & 8 hot cues.

The CDJ350 is the classic beginner CDJ. It plays from CD or USB, and is Rekordbox compatible, but without link functionality, so you will need one USB key for each deck. The jog wheels are small and the display is very basic, so they feel different to a CDJ2000 & searching for tracks is much more laborious. Also has HID mode for DVS systems. Recommended mixer is DJM350.

The CDJ900 is a great allrounder. It plays from CD or USB, and is Rekordbox compatible, with link functionality like CDJ2000, so you only need one USB key. The jog wheels are similar to CDJ2000 but the display is very basic, so they feel like CDJ2000, but searching for tracks is much more laborious. Also has HID mode for DVS systems. Recommended mixer is DJM600.

The DJM600 has a similar layout to the current models, but the sound quality is nowhere near as good. There are 8 “beat effects” including filter, echo, delay, reverb, and flanger but no manual HPF/LPF filter. A good choice if you’re on a budget but need the classic layout.

The DJM350 is the smallest of the Pioneer mixers, with 4 inbuilt effects on a sweep control (gate, jet, crush & filter), and a USB input for recording of mixes. There are only two channels, but both have two inputs so you can easily hook up a laptop or iPod alongside two CDJs.

Roland DJ808

Serato

The DJ808 is the daddy of 4 channel DJ controllers and has the most accurate jog wheels available. The Serato DJ Pro software is free and this controller incorporates a 4 channel DJ mixer with 4 hardware based effects that work on the filter knob, as well as an analog TR-S drum machine based on the Roland TR8 that interacts perfectly with the Serato DJ Pro sample decks for DJs that want to get really creative!

The 4 channel DDJ-SX2 is our pick of the best-selling SX range for Serato. It has 8 high quality pads for each channel which can be used for hot cues, loop rolls or samples. There are also 3 dedicated effects controls for each deck, and a touch strip track search function, just like the CDJ2000. It also features DVS mode, so that you can connect turntables (or CDJs) to control Serato.

The most widely used version of the classic Native Instruments  Traktor DJ controller is the S4mk2. With a traditional layout of 4 channels and 2 jog wheels, this is a great way to use Traktor if you want to keep things simple and avoid bringing additional controllers etc. It even works via USB bus power, so there is no need to plug it in to a socket – the perfect way to DJ from Traktor on your holidays…..
